Using PowerPoint In An Observed Exercise

For many of us, the challenge of applying for a new job or promotion can sometimes be overshadowed by the prospect of having to perform an observed exercise. Often this is set as delivering a presentation, for example to highlight your industry skills and achievements. If you plan to create a presentation in PowerPoint, then you already have the medium to help you deliver a professional presentation. Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 has an array of tools including SmartArt and a host of Themes which guarantee that you will create a winning slide show.

Thinking Outside The Box With Widescreen In PowerPoint

Sometimes it pays to think outside the box. Take a typical PowerPoint presentation. A blank page slide will be set to default as landscape, with sizes in proportion to most screens. However, there is nothing to stop you creating a slide show entirely in portrait format if this lends itself better to your delivery. When presenting a continuation of portrait images, for example, you can select the portrait set up for your slides. The images don't have to be sized into landscape shapes, or have floating space around them which might spoil the effect of the composition.

Using Music To Hit The Right Notes In Your Presentation

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 has a range of functions that enable you to add in sounds to your presentation, but music is often an afterthought when it comes to designing and delivering the finished creation. Music is frequently used for nothing more than background noise during a presentation. However, by using some thought about how music is going to be used in your PowerPoint presentation, you can help create a number of benefits for you and your audience.

Discover The Missing Link In PowerPoint

There has been a lot of debate about whether using a hyperlink to a web page is really necessary when a simple screenshot of a page might work just well in PowerPoint 2007 presentations. However, as slide shows become more professional, audience expectation of what's interesting has also become more sophisticated. A hyperlink in a presentation is just one of the tools in PowerPoint 2007 that can really sort the wheat from the chaff.

Using The Templates In Visio 2010

There are many, many templates within Visio 2010 and although they are ordered in logical groups, it can be very overwhelming for the new user. Visio can be a useful tool in many different areas of our working life and the templates can help even the novice user get started. When considering the best way to use Visio templates, let us examine some key uses. The templates within Visio do not work in the same way as a template in Word. Because the purpose is the creation of diagrams, the templates are broken down into types of symbols that would go into a particular type of diagram rather than a set document where you personalise set items. For example, selecting the flow diagram will give all the flow diagram symbols which can be clicked and dragged onto the diagram.

Driving Your Business Forward With Microsoft Visio

A car is a complicated thing. From when you turn the key, many things have to happen for the engine to start. To make it move requires further complications and more still to keep it running. The process may be mostly invisible, at least to those of us for whom the machinations between pedal and wheel are blanketed in a fog of inscrutable mystery, but if one little part of the process develops a problem, then the whole can be affected - it might stop working altogether or it might begin to develop an extra, secret problem for you to happen upon in dismay some time in the future. Similarly, if you want to change something, a little improvement to the performance perhaps, it needs to be fitted into the process correctly to get the best results.

For all the billions of people in this world, there's only one of you, one of me, one of anyone. We're all unique and individual. Yet the software we use is not; approximately eighty percent of businesses, (according to a recent report by Forrester Research) use Microsoft Office in some form or another and of those rare exceptions, many will use either OpenOffice or Lotus. Create An Excel VBA Add In

If you have created VBA code and want the sub procedures and functions to be available in all existing and future workbooks you create, then the best way to access your VBA code is to create an Excel Add In. An add in for all intent and purpose, is a regular Excel Workbook with VBA which has a .xlam (or .xla in Excel 2003 or earlier) file extension. Once saved and installed as an Add In, the workbook is automatically opened and hidden so the VBA procedures and functions are accessible to all other workbooks. The Add In is hidden in a special way so that it can only be seen from the Project Explorer in the Visual Basic Editor (VBE) and can not be unhidden from within Excel. Add Ins are an ideal way of distributing VBA code. Excel comes with Add Ins that are not installed by default like Analysis ToolPak, Solver etc.

VBA With Excel - Making The Working Day That Little Bit Easier

Samantha is very familiar with Excel. There's no shortage of articles much like this one devoted to the complete Excel novice - but Samantha has spent quite a lot of her working days staring at Excel, running through the same processes over and over again. So it's fair to say that she's not a novice - although it's also fair to say that she's grown decidedly frustrated with having to hit the same buttons and click the same choices over and over again, time after time. If only there was a way to reduce these repetitive tasks to a single click or keystroke, she'd have more time in her day, and a much more cheerful time at that.

Converting Colour Space In Publisher

Many moons ago when I was a young man I produced my own music fanzine, a very crude publication that consisted of photocopied A4 sheets stapled down the left side. Getting each issue onto the streets was a lengthy chore that saw me painstakingly type out interviews and articles on a huge manual typewriter. I would then hand the completed typing over to my mother, who took it to work to have the text reduced on a photocopier. Finally I would lay out the pages, creating headlines using lettering transfer kits and sticking down blocks of text and photographs when I was happy with their positions. This was a tricky operation on which the visual impact of the fanzine depended as back in those days cut and paste meant scissors and a glue stick and once something was stuck down it was pretty much permanent.

Effective Communication For Managers

Effective communication is a staple of good management. It is partly about learning the difference between communicating and merely talking. You can talk for an hour without properly conveying a message. To communicate effectively, never waffle, but use concise, clear and intelligible language. Good communicators coherently assert ideas and commands so they are fully understood. It is also about receiving ideas and information from employees. To effectively communicate, understand the different kinds of communication both verbal and non-verbal and know when each one is appropriate. A modern workplace encourages and depends upon an exchange of ideas and information to achieve maximum productivity, innovation and efficiency. This cannot be achieved by a one-sided issuing of commands, but only by fully engaging with staff, clients and suppliers.

How To Manage A Multi-Cultural Office

Having lived outside of London for several years I worked at some offices where the majority of staff were white, middle class English people. When I moved to London I worked in a place where every person on my six seat desk area was from a different country and a different religion. I found this experience enriching and interesting since the people had such wide and varied experience and this tended to filter through to the work. Solutions were varied and innovative since the knowledge base was extensive. Some managers find it challenging to manage a multi-cultural office since the extreme differences in religion and culture can be daunting as well as causing a range of issues. Time Management Up Against The Clock

When I was a child I sometimes watched an Australian-made television programme called The Magic Boomerang. The premise of this show, you may not be surprised to learn, was that a young lad by the name of Tom found an old boomerang that held magical properties. When the boomerang was thrown, time stood still for everyone except Tom and it restarted again when he caught it. It was as though he were in possession of a flying pause button. Of course, children's television being what it was back then, Tom used the boomerang's powers for the good of the local community, thwarting bank raids and rescuing people from precarious situations.

Saying No To New Demands, And Saying Yes To Progress

Time isn't a limitless resource. It's hard enough trying to find time for everything that you really have to do, even before you look at squeezing in some things that you would like to do around the sides - and it becomes a lot harder if you're expected to find gaps in your schedule for the demands and requests and hopes and could-you-pleases and if-you-have-a-moments that others may send your way. In business as in life as a whole, you need to keep these extras under control. Of course, there's never anything wrong with helping someone else out - but there must be limits, and it's a good idea to start drawing that line at the point at which you or your business will start genuinely to suffer from the overstretching of your valuable time.

Time Management: If The Lord Didn't Do It All In A Day - How Can You?

Okay, so you finally made the decision to study for that career which has followed you from infancy through to puberty and now pseudo-adulthood. I use the term pseudo adulthood because University, to most students equates to how many pound a pint evenings you can withstand before you finally topple over. For many, the term university means freedom, breaking free from the restraints of home life and taking the world by the horns or in most cases, by the pint glass. Although, this playground of fun may entice even the less studious, the aim of the three year plus stint is to come away with those sought after qualifications needed to jump the queue when it comes to interview time.

What To Do When You've Run Out Of Time

There's an interesting aspect of time management that is very rarely discussed. Everyone presumes that with a bit of training and a lot of organisation, you'll always have the skills to manage your time effectively and never run out of it. There are some incidents that happen in working lives though, that mean you really do run out of time. What do you do then? No time management guru can help you - you're already too late, the clock has ticked its way down, the deadline is here. It's not the end of the world - and if it happens often, that's a clear indication that you've not managed your time - but never mind that. Let's see what can be done when there's no time to be had.

Top Trumps- The Time Management Set

Prioritising your workload is the key to efficient time management. It stands to reason that those jobs that are most urgent should be done first and the less urgent ones left in the pile until tomorrow, (although when tomorrow comes you will usually find that these tasks have taken on a new urgency overnight: it is the nature of the beast.) But it is never simply a case of adopting an attitude of 'this job makes the most money and so it should take priority,' there are many more factors that come into play when deciding the order of the tasks you have to do and I shall demonstrate this with assistance from a rather unexpected source.

Tools You Already Have - To Manage Your Time

With the vast improvements in office software and technology, Blackberries, mobile phones and the ubiquitous ipads and iphones, there are more and more tools at our disposal to manage our time: but are we really using them? In this day and age, it's surprising that so many of us rely solely on our wristwatch to manage our time. Or rather, let us know if we're ahead or behind a schedule. In a fast paced environment, it's probably not going to be good enough. You need to know how many tasks you have left within the remaining timescale, and how long each task will take before you can even make the decision that you're late. Here are some ideas on how you can use equipment or software - that you more than likely already have - to help you manage your time better.

Time Management For Professional Mums

Okay, let's run through a typical daily routine... the alarm shrills with a deafening sound at the crack of dawn, you bolt upright and then snuggle back down striving for an extra two to three minutes sleep because you think it will make all of the difference. However, time is of the essence so you reluctantly flick back the duvet and pray that the shower will make you feel half human. Then, it's time to get dressed for the office as you rush down into the kitchen to prepare the children's breakfast.

The Tell-tale Signs Of Stress

Despite being a major problem affecting many more people than perhaps we realise, stress is often not taken as seriously as it should be. A mug bearing a cartoon of a wild-eyed character tearing his hair out above the word 'stressed' may make an amusing gift to a colleague, but if the recipient is genuinely suffering from stress then it is anything but a laughing matter.

Eight Major Stress Traps To Avoid

Managing stress at work is increasingly difficult for us in these tough times. Managing Stress In The Workplace

In the 1999 film Pushing Tin a huge rivalry erupts between a cocksure air-traffic controller and a new arrival. Their spats are carried out in front of the rest of the control team, which comprises a collection of oddball characters into whose hands you would not really want to place your life. One such character, nicknamed Doctor Freeze, makes a brief appearance but not in his job as a controller guiding planes onto the runway. We learn that Freeze earned his nickname because he froze under the stress of the job some time earlier and he lost his nerve to the extent that he has not been able to return to work since, as each attempt he makes ends in retreat. The entire workforce is alerted to Freeze's arrival in the car park and bets are taken on how far he will get this time before he crumbles. As he prepares to leave his car Freeze repeatedly assures himself that "it's a big sky; lots of room." By the time he reaches the doors of the building, however, he lives up to his name and then bolts back to his car as the winners collect their money.

Time Management - The Tortoise And The Hare

When I was a child I had a book of Aesop's Fables. I don't know how popular these tales are these days, but I remember being struck by the cleverness of them. For example, in The Crow and the Pitcher, a thirsty crow cannot reach the water in the bottom of a pitcher to drink. However, this crow had clearly brushed up on his problem-solving skills and he dropped stones into the pitcher until the water level had risen enough so that he could drink. Clever.

Managing Time Effectively By Considering Unforeseen Events

Time and activities can be planned out to the last minute so a person feels in control and organised. The problem with schedules is that unforeseen events and problems can wreak havoc with your time management. How do you go about managing your time while minimising the damage from such events? Such things can range from the simple, such as it rained on a sunny day and now I have to go change before I go to the meeting, to a sick child that needs you to leave now and pick him up. Solutions therefore range from the simple, as in always carry an umbrella, to the complicated as in make sure some else always has information on your critical tasks. Nobody can plan for everything, but considering unforeseen events can help you manage your time by lessening their impact.

Time Management: Do Not Become A Prisoner Of Time

The clock is constantly ticking away as we remain a continual slave to the days, hours, minutes and seconds which lie before us counting down silently in the background. Mentoring - Ensuring Past Experience Helps Your Company's Future

Experience is a valuable resource, one that can only be earned through living. Most businesses will have a number of highly experienced individuals amongst their staff; most managers understand the benefit brought by employees who've built a wealth of knowledge and skills throughout their working life. Just as a successful football team benefits from a mixture of sprightly youngsters of prodigious skill and seasoned veterans of the contest, their reading of the game and ability to deal with situations enhanced by the effects of hundreds of matches, so too can any business gain from such a blend.

The Myth Of Mentorship

This may not surprise you but the role of "mentor" is a very old one. From trainee samurai warriors to the echelons of the business place, mentorship is everywhere. Mentorship is more of a hands-off guidance and nurturing rather than the role of trainer and trainee.

How To Delegate In The Workplace

I can sympathise with the view that if you want a job done properly then you should do it yourself. It can be hard to let go and trust someone else with something that others may judge you upon. Another school of thought says that if you have a dog you don't bark yourself. You wouldn't send your team to the pub and work long into the night just to do everything yourself. So should you do it all yourself or should you give all the work to someone else? Neither! You should learn to properly delegate which is a happy compromise. It is impossible to do everything yourself and you may not have the skill set necessary to do so. It is therefore practical to balance your time and workload by finding people to help you. Use well trained, competent staff who can be trusted with tasks. Let them show you how well they can handle things while at the same time keeping some appropriate tasks for yourself and assuming a guidance and overseer role.

What You Need To Know About New Security Features In Access 2007

When you start working with Access 2007 for the first time you may have been surprised with the security warning message you see every time you open a database file. You can thank the Access 2007 Trust Center for guarding the file in this way. The Trust Center blocks all Access functions which can potentially run malicious code - hence the warning message. And Access 2007 will do this for files created under any Access version. This is one of a number of new security features of Access 2007. This article looks at the two most important of these features; the Trust Center and Password encryption.

Access 2007 Is All About Systems

When you start using Access 2007 you need to think SYSTEMS! That's because an Access database consists of several components all linked together to form a single system. A database system can be seen as a set of input items, data storage areas, processing elements and output items such as paper printouts. At the heart of Access is the data storage area consisting of one or more tables. To input information into these tables you can use Forms, to process information you can use Queries and to output information you can use Reports. This article takes a look at Access 2007 from a systems point of view and summarises how the various elements link together.

Have You Ever Wanted To Create A Combo Control On An Access Form?

Once you can comfortably build tables, queries and forms in Access, you may want to focus further on your forms design to ensure your database is really user friendly. One way to do this is to use one or more Combo controls for data entry. Once you start using Microsoft Project you'll soon be setting up new projects using the default Gantt Chart view, with the Entry table showing on the left and the Gantt Chart on the right. Each project consist of a series of tasks with different durations, all linked together to build the overall project plan. In this process you would normally also set a project start date and Project displays all the linked tasks on the Gantt Chart and determines the project end date. Alternatively you can set the project end date and Project displays all the linked tasks and determines the project start date.

Business Forecasting With Microsoft Excel

All businesses must plan for the future if they want to stay in business and prosper. Nobody really knows what the future will bring but sitting back and accepting what it may bring without trying to at least prepare for it, will set a course to failure.

How MS Project Can Make Your Business More Efficient

Everything works better if people move together. Roads flow, orchestras play, schoolchildren face the front, rugby teams carry the ball in the right direction, ballets are performed without catastrophe. Businesses run, too. Whatever kind of business it may be, however large or small, any organisation can gain from having a workforce that moves together and knows where it's heading and how to get there.

Which Is Better, Excel Or Access?

I am often shown Excel workbooks that have been set up as a database to store information. Nothing wrong with that! However, as an experienced Microsoft Office Trainer, I sometime feel that the workbook I am being shown is large, cumbersome and very user unfriendly and would be better if the data wasn't stored in Excel at all, but stored in a simple Access database. In this article I am going to examine in which circumstances Excel is best for databases and for which Access is better suited.

Communicating Your Project Without Microsoft Project.

You've spent a great deal of time working and refining your project plan and are ready to communicate it to others in your team who may or, as often the case, may not have access to Microsoft Project. Communicating the project effectively is key to the project's success and with all the task, resources, dates and times locked into Microsoft Project you may find that you are unable to share this information. Project therefore includes tools for communicating your project using other applications such as Word, PowerPoint or even publishing it on a webpage. One of these tools is the Copy Picture to Office Wizard.
