Turning De-motivation Into Motivation

Back in the early 1980s, when Pacman ruled the roost and a condition known as Rubik's thumb was keeping people off work, nobody watched television while getting ready for work or school. The radio was a far better option because the only thing you were likely to see on television at that time of day back then was an Open University programme featuring a long-haired, bespectacled lecturer with splendid sideburns and a jacket with leather patches at the elbows, who'd quite possibly be talking about sine and cosine, before going off at a tangent. It was enough to put a person off their sugar puffs.

How To Prioritise Work Tasks

It can is often the case that colleagues and clients will have given you a long list of tasks. Each person categorised his or her own task as urgent, but there are too many for you to complete in one day. This can lead to you feeling overworked, guilty and out of control. In order to regain control over your workload, it is necessary to learn how to prioritise the work. There are many factors which will affect the priority you give to a task and it is important to remember that the actual priority may conflict with the priority the person who requested it has suggested. Part of the process of prioritising tasks is therefore dealing with the people who gave them to you.

Stop Wasting Your Time! How To Reduce Time Wastage

As people take on more and more responsibility, time management skills become ever more necessary. Part of effective time management is prioritising and organising everything you need to do, be it recurring or ad-hoc tasks. Another element is learning how to reduce the time you waste or use inefficiently. Time wastage is defined as any time that is not productive, beneficial or purposeful. How can you manage your time to cut down on wasted time thus increasing your performance? The first step is to remember that there are only twenty four hours in a day and you are only one person or at best a member of one team. You will never be able to get everything done all of the time.

Using Technology To Help Your Employees Manage Their Time

It used to be so simple in the eighties! We all knew where we were with the white board and black magic markers. There were forty seven yellow post-it notes around every monitor. Each person had a scribbled to do list covered in a few doodles. Of course the dream was shattered when some bright spark introduced pink and green post-it notes and blue and red markers. It was clear that things were about to get complicated and technical and technology would be the answer. There are a million ways a manager can use technology to give employees the tools they need to manage their time more effectively. This does not mean using word to scribble a to-do list! These days one task might have four relevant emails, two phone calls and three meetings just as a start. How can you allow your team to consolidate everything they need to complete a task and plan their projects and working day?

Motivating Yourself Via Personal Goals

Motivation is important to all people and it can come from different places. Some people are lucky enough to be self-motivated. This means they can look objectively at their life and see exactly what they want to do with it and what they want from it. Such a person will have a list of things they want in the short and long term and are motivated to spend their time achieving these things and will not need to be constantly motivated by a third party. Third party motivation can also be a positive force. An example would be a manager attempting to motivate you to learn something new by sending you on a training course with the promise of a promotion should you be successful in your endeavours.

Assertiveness In The Workplace

Assertiveness is a vital skill for all people, regardless of whether they use it in the workplace or not. A mother must learn to be assertive in order to bring up a healthy and well-rounded child. A child must learn to be assertive in order to overcome bullies, get the most from their education and learn to set about achieving their life goals. Assertiveness in the workplace is unique in that it must be combined with a professional approach. Every action you take within the workplace is likely to leave another person, be it client or colleague, with an impression of you. If that impression is negative in any way then complaints will be made and careers can be jeopardised. It is therefore necessary to learn how to be assertive in order to feel confident, achieve your goals and the company's goals while building a good working relationship with clients, contacts and colleagues.

Using Negotiation Skills For A Pay Increase

When negotiating a salary increase, it is vital to select a favourable time for the manager and for the company in general. Begin by considering the company's economic position overall. If the country is in the middle of a recession for example, then do not make yourself seem foolish by asking for a pay rise the company cannot possibly give. Sometimes you just have to wait! It is also necessary to pick a time when your manager will be able to give you complete focus and attention without being too stressed, tired or distracted. It is true that your manager will always be busy so ask him/her for a set meeting in the morning when you are both fresh. Make sure this time is not right before a big sales meeting etc so full attention can be shared on both sides.

How To Begin Managing Your Time Effectively

Managing time can be extremely difficult due to the way a modern office works. Managers want the best value for money from their employees and the highest profit margins. This can often mean less staff doing more work. When this is the case, learning how to effectively manage your time becomes a critical skill. If you do not have a decent time management plan then you may well become disorganised. This will lead to mistakes, poor performance, missed deadlines, disgruntled colleagues or clients and will leave you feeling overwhelmed and miserable. It is therefore vital to consider the best way of managing your time according to the type of work you do.

Learning How To Say 'No' For Effective Time Management

Time management would be so easy if it weren't for other people! Every morning I arrive at my desk and take a look all the tasks I have to do, prioritise them accordingly and plan out my day. I even plan out an additional 'spare' half hour in case any little things crop up. Managing time in this way is effective because you can schedule in a realistic day of work and maximise your productivity. The problem with this theory however is that my colleagues are constantly adding tasks throughout the day.

Setting Goals - The SMART Route To Success

Time is a valuable commodity for any business. However, unlike so many other resources - such as money, or labour, or materials, or space, or brand exposure - it's not something that can be increased. No matter how hard you try, you can't eke an extra minute out of a day, you can't make a move that will give you more time to work with. But you can make more of it, and fill each unforgiving minute with sixty-seconds worth of distance run.

Why And How Do We Procrastinate?

Everyone has experience with procrastinating and not getting a job done. Procrastination is a thief of time, and a destructive force to time management. It's usually not productive, it usually has a negative effect on how effective our time is managed, and it usually needs to be nipped in the bud. We all do it - but why? There are some underlying reasons why we procrastinate - some more telling than others.

Beat The Monday Blues With Time Management

It's a scary fact (to employers) that most of us do far less on a Friday than we do on a Monday. Friday is the winding-down-the-week stuff, and some of us (the lucky ones) even go home early at the end of the week. The "I'll finish that next week" syndrome just before the weekend will usually cause problems in the long run. You start lagging behind with your work, and then it's almost tempting to take some work home or - shock, horror - come in during the weekend for "just an hour" to clean up the various things you abandoned.

Technology Based Versus Paper Based Diary Keeping

Many people have used a paper book style diary for years and it has worked perfectly well for them. Some of them even have beautiful leather bound ones to look extra official when planning out their day. These days a lot of people would not consider a paper diary as there is plenty of diary software to use and it has almost become second nature to use the technology available to us. But what are the advantages of moving to software based diary versus a paper one? Can technology ever fully replace paper?

Managing Your 'Me' Time

The work/life balance is one of the crucial time management skills shared by those who are most successful in business. Knowing how to manage time for yourself is not selfish. On the contrary, "me time" boosts your general well being, self esteem, happiness levels and quality of life. Sadly most people are ineffectively managing their time at work, so they take it home with them. Then it's not just the individual that starts to suffer, but so will family, friends and social life as the domino effect of "not enough hours in the day" takes its toll.

Are You A Time Waster?

Your immediate answer to "are you a time waster?" is probably "of course not!" right? Most of us consider ourselves to be hard working, productive employees. Then why do we sometimes complain that we don't have enough hours in the day to complete our tasks? Why do we sometimes bring our work home with us? Why do we end up working late at the office? These are symptoms of wasting time - not on useless things - but on work with lower priority. There are common traps that catch people out, and make them end up wasting time at the office.

Picture the scene - if you're fortunate enough to be early or ahead of schedule (let's say, having 15 minutes spare before you need to set off and drive to work), do you ever find yourself "killing" time? The world of nature is awash with examples of the dominance of one species over another; from weeds taking over a flower-bed, to the grey squirrel forcing out the weaker red, survival of the fittest is nature's law. Correct In, Garbage Out

GIGO, or Garbage In, Garbage Out, is a term that was devised way back in the early days of computing to remind us that if we put incorrect information into our machine, then we will get incorrect information back out. This may seem rather obvious, but you'd be surprised at the expectations some people have of computers. The man generally acknowledged as the inventor of the computer, Charles Babbage, was more than once asked of his new machine, if the operator puts the wrong figures in, will the machine still provide the correct answer? Babbage gave a splendid summing-up of such people's train of thought when he said

Need To Make A Key Presentation? Get Smart!

The presentational slide show is not a new idea. From text printed or handwritten onto acetates for an overhead projector, to the same text typed into a PowerPoint presentation, perhaps with the odd brightly coloured piece of clipart dropped in for good measure. As you click through from one slide to another only slightly different, you have to put more of yourself in, to give the show more of your energy and your belief in what it is that you're trying to say, in order to stop minds from wandering away behind eyes that feign to watch. Let's be honest, shall we? This conventional approach to a presentation isn't exactly thrilling, and it can be hard work ensuring that it shows both the subject and yourself in a positive light.

The logo seems to be the right size, but as soon as it's placed next to your text, the type jumps down a line, or there's too much white space above the image. Better Budgets And Projected Profits

No company makes so much money that they needn't care about wasting it. It's important, particularly if your business is new, both to keep a close eye on where the pennies are going, and to be aware of whether they're being put to optimal use. Effective and efficient management of the company's budget can mean the difference between success and failure in a competitive. But it's not always easy to do so; even if you're precisely monitoring incomes and expenditures, it's never as simple to calculate how those figures will pan out in the future, and what impact any changes you make will have.

Microsoft Outlook is not an unfamiliar name to the world's PC users. Many of the ninety-five percent of the world's PCs that run one form or another of Windows will have a spot in their program menu marked Outlook. So, it's probably fair to assume that we all know what it's there for - it sends and receives emails, a simple little application that allows you a straightforward means of communication with the wider world. Correct?

Flexible Uses For Excel At Home

Excel has earned its reputation as a solid business application, and rightly so. The attraction is that most home users have heard of it, and often have it in their home office, too. The problem is that when people are asked to find a use for it outside of business or number crunching, most people are stumped. It's such a flexible application, there's really no need to pigeonhole it into the realms of something you just do at work with spreadsheets. Spread your Excel wings! You and your family will probably find it could do a lot more for you than you thought. Here are some suggestions on how you can use Excel to help you in daily life.

Managing Stress In The Workplace

"Aaargh, I'm so stressed!". Who among us have uttered that woeful sentence at work, or heard others do so? The word 'stress' is thrown around a lot these days, and it seems all of us suffer from it at one time or another.. If you thought ALL stress was bad - think again. Stress is natural, we cannot exist without a little of it in our lives. It sounds counterintuitive, doesn't it? It's only the way each individual deals with certain amounts of stress that eventually factors in whether it's bad for you or not.

Using And Creating Dreamweaver Templates

Time is money, as we all know - no more so than in the world of website design. If you've mastered the basics of Dreamweaver, or perhaps even some raw html coding too, you might be frustrated at just how long it takes you to plan, design, and execute a site. Unless you're a seasoned designer with a bespoke specification you promised to do for a client, then there are much simpler, stress-free ways of making websites quickly - you do it with templates.

Mastering The Art Of Meetings

Meetings are often maligned by staff and managers alike for usually being unproductive and a waste of time. Then again, a great meeting will be confidence-inspiring, motivating, and energizing. There's no getting rid of meetings - they are a necessary evil in the corporate world. A meeting makes people feel included in the organisation and its goals and achievements. None of us can get away with never seeing our colleagues face to face, having a brainstorm, or simply making announcements to each other.

How To Paste Without Slicing Your Fingers

Many, many years ago when I first worked with words and pictures, my least favourite task in the art studio was cutting out type from paper galley proofs and pasting up. Using a Swann-Morton scalpel it involved carefully cutting along a fresh galley of printed type. It was important not to use a plastic ruler - the scalpel blade had a nasty habit of jumping off and slicing through a finger tip if it hit against the pliable edge. A metal one had much less chance of moving when working with a new blade.

SmartArt - Never Lost In Translation

As artificial intelligence becomes more developed and computers are programmed in speech recognition, there can still be some interesting cases of errors in translation. A 'mondegreen' is the term given to mishearing, usually accidental, of a phrase, so that it acquires a new meaning. An example of a mondegreen is: "I led the pigeons to the flag" (for "I pledge allegiance to the flag").

How Much Time Could You Save With Access?

Time is money; so goes the old truism. In a competitive market, any time that can be saved on one task can be put to something more useful. A great deal of time can be spent on managing the details of clients, customers or suppliers, on keeping the information updated, relevant, and all together in an accessible location; and the larger the list of people and organisations about whom information is kept, the more time is able to be thus used up.

Your Own Online Business With Dreamweaver

Once upon a time, not so very long ago in fact, a business in the retail sector was just a shop, or a chain of shops perhaps. If you ran a company that sold things, you did so in a building with lots of shelves. Customers, meanwhile, would be those people who came into your shop, plucked items from said shelves, and queued up to pay for them. The whole process was expensive to start and to maintain, and restrictive in what it enabled you to do with your business. But it was also straightforward, with items physically placed around a space in order to sell them.

Using Your Brains In Time Management

Meeting deadlines and clients on time can be more of a struggle for some workers whose time management skills appear to be lacking. Turning in work and getting to places without being late seems to come more easily for different kinds of people. This may have been termed disorganisation or even laziness in the past, but scientists are increasingly pinpointing our brains as a major component in whether we carry out tasks in a timely manner. The majority of people probably feel there are two main kinds of workers, those that consistently organise themselves well and those that do not.
