Better Communication Means Better Cooperation For Your Company

Mind reading has traditionally been the preserve of holiday camp magicians and the occasional huckster. But imagine what it could do for your business! No more memos, no more meetings, no more presentations or negotiations or suggestion boxes - just fingers on temples, concentration, and instantaneous results. Messages and ideas flit through the office air, bouncing between brains and unifying the workforce into a single hyper-productive consciousness. Success would be guaranteed!

It's Time To Go Live With PowerPoint 2010

Most of us have been invited to attend or talk at a conference; whether it's on business issues, hobbies and interests, or product innovations, a conference is the ideal opportunity to meet and greet others with similar interests, but who you might otherwise never have a face to face conversation with. You can, literally, walk in their space. It's a time to network and also hear from learned speakers. Conferences are the ideal places to quench that thirst for knowledge, combined with our need for human interaction.

Let InDesign Transform Your Print And Online Presence

Keeping local news alive is an uphill struggle in a global age, but it's an important one: although it's unquestionably a benefit to be able to connect to any corner of the world, communities rely on common understanding and awareness. To maintain local news provision necessitates making it as widely accessible as possible, so that it has the opportunity to compete with, or at least be noticed in, the vast network of international information that is universally available today. With this in mind, the owners of the Corenthwaite Chronicle are looking to overhaul both their print and online services in order to reach as many people in the local and wider communities as possible.

Visio 2010: More Tools Than Ever For Understanding Your Business

Microsoft Office has a certain ubiquity, an electronic omnipresence; it's become increasingly rare over recent years to find a PC that isn't running at least one aspect of the Office suite, with Word, Outlook, Excel and Access being particularly universal. Indeed, there was a time (the early 1990s, to be specific) when Office comprised only those four applications. Nowadays, however, Microsoft intend their flagship software collection to cover every possible need, whether for business, home use, or education.

Managing The Individuals Who Make Up The Team

A report of a football match is a good example of assessing the performance of a team and of each member of that team. The reporter may say that United were strong at the back, that they bossed the midfield or that they used the full width of the pitch. These are assessments of the team at work. After the report comes the player ratings, where the performance of each individual is given marks out of ten, with perhaps the penalty-saving goalkeeper coming out on top with eight out of ten, while the centre-forward, who missed a sitter and had a general off day, scores an uncharacteristic five.

How To Create An Argument With Excel

For many of us formula is the F-word in the world of Excel - you either love it or hate it. But formulas are powerful equations that can perform calculations, return information, manipulate the contents of other cells, test conditions, and much, much more. A formula always starts with an equal sign (=). Some useful examples of Excel formulas include: =SQRT(A1) which makes use of the SQRT function to return the square root of the value in A1; =TODAY() this returns the current date; and =IF(A1>0,"Plus","Minus") which tests the cell A1 to determine if it contains a value greater than 0. If the result of the test is true, the text "Plus" appears in the cell; if the result is false, the text "Minus" appears.

Time Management. Effective Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Day

What is the meaning of life? Is it about being on earth for a set number of years and working hard to accomplish success? Or is it about enjoying the process of achieving goals? How Excel Can Help You See Into Your Business's Future

Roman tradition had it that the god Janus was blessed with two faces - one that could see into the past, another that could look forward into the future, a gift presented to him by Saturn, god of time and age. All that had passed and all that was to pass was Janus's to observe; with hind- and foresight unblinkered, he could strike against the Roman army when they would do ill, and protect them when they fought in the interests of what was right. Sadly, our eyes look out only into the present, and though we can keep the past alive, the future remains forever shrouded in mist.

Let's face it, a screen comprising nothing but data-filled cells is hardly a visual treat that is likely to set the pulse racing. And yet Excel is an amazingly powerful application that is used and relied upon by millions every day.

Excel Brings You The Tools To Spice Up Your Spreadsheets

Before new technology parked picture editing firmly on the desktop, I remember marking up photographs by hand to be scanned by the reproduction department: size, ratio, cropping and whether the image was worthy enough to be treated as colour were instructions that had to be written on the back of each photograph with a chinagraph pencil.

Radio Buttons And Check Boxes In Excel

As efficient as Microsoft Excel is, there is little that is visually pleasing in a screen full of columns and rows. This does not really matter, for while other Office applications may offer more in the way of visuals, Excel is the brains of the family; the hard working son who gets on with his homework while the rest of the family get ready for a fancy dress party. That is not to say that Excel is a stick-in-the-mud; there are many ways to brighten up your worksheets with different coloured backgrounds and lines, and by adding graphics. You can also achieve that professional touch by adding radio buttons or check boxes.

Importing Excel Data Into Access

Incompatibility causes misery wherever it occurs. When your new girlfriend calls to break things off because she doesn't share your passion for train spotting in January, that's incompatibility. Back in the fledgling days of the home video player, that night in watching a new release was scuppered when it was discovered that the tape was VHS - completely incompatible with the Beta Max player that sat beside the television. And a more current example of incompatibility is that you cannot play a Wii game on the X Box 360.

Why Budgeting Is Essential In Project Management

Since projects are always moving and changing, most of the elements that comprise a project can be moved or changed flexibly to suit the deadlines and milestones it contains. There's one element of a project, however, that could scupper the entire project as a whole: the budget.

Healthier Staff Make For A Healthier Business

As managers, we have a certain responsibility for those in our charge. We want them to have a successful career within the company, to contribute to its progress, and to be able to have a pleasant time in and out of work. However, some things are beyond our control; no matter how good we are to our staff, we can't guarantee everything will go swimmingly for them. And unfortunately, one of the most significant and common obstacles that we can't prevent is illness.

Assertiveness doesn't come naturally to many people. They confuse it with aggression or dominance in the workplace, and fear becoming a hate figure or a pushy individual at work. Making It Easy To Turn Printed Publications Into Effective Online Content

Car & Bike Monthly have been reviewing and discussing cars and bikes (yes, on a monthly basis) for generations, and their accumulated hundreds of back issues contain a tremendous array of information on every model of car and bike ever to pass along this country's roads. In recent years, their website has become an increasingly prominent part of their business, receiving a great number of hits from visitors browsing the web for information about this car or that bike. However, the feedback section on their site regularly includes requests for old reviews and discussions, from second-hand buyers to classic car and bike enthusiasts; consequently, the editors have decided to embark upon the mammoth task of placing pre-web content online.

How Stepping Up To 7 Can Mean A Major Boost For Your Business

Almost half of all PC users still work with Windows XP, substantially more than any other operating system - and for many businesses, it's been easier to stick with the tried, trusted and already licensed XP than to move onto a new version. It's also not uncommon for companies and individuals to have chosen specifically not to upgrade, given the negative press and public concerns surrounding Windows Vista; under such circumstances, it can hardly come as a surprise that some would prefer to stay put, rather than spending on new software that they're not entirely sure about.

A Better Impression For Your Business, With Adobe Dreamweaver

Ed sells sheds. Rather more than that; Ed runs his own business, erecting bespoke sheds in a range of styles and models to fit whatever outside storage needs his customers might have. Some years ago, Ed's friend Dennis designed a website for the company (as Dennis was looking to establish his own business in web design). Initially, this produced very positive results. Today, however, things aren't going as well - his local rivals have websites of their own that are more modern and enticing, and Ed feels that with his site looking outdated, it's hard for his voice to be heard in a crowded market.

Before modern photo-editing tools, publishing images was much more honest. Wasn't it?

Simplifying The Web With Dreamweaver CS5

Adobe's Dreamweaver is pretty much the daddy of web design programs, such is its reputation and influence on all that came after its first incarnation. Without it, the story of website creation would be very different as it was the first software to recognise the importance of custom design and applications.

Break The Mystery Of Code With Excel Macros

With the introduction of Excel 2010 came slicers (to enable better filtering of data in pivot tables); sparklines (tiny charts that fit into a cell); the AGGREGATE function, the Equation Editor and a smoother way to paste. But for many of us, by far the best feature is the new and improved Macro recording functions. Now, you can even record macros to automatically manipulate shapes. It is big and it is clever, but it's also very easy to use.

How Office Clipboard Cuts Across Program Boundaries

We learn something new every day. Like the fact that a typical adult brain contains 15 billion to 200 billion neurons. This number represents the amount of information in 10 billion Encyclopaedia pages. The brain is a very big place in a very small space. Our brains can processes 400 billion bits of information a second, but we are only aware of 2,000 of those.

Why Use VBA In The Office 2010 Suite?

All the Office 2010 applications allow users to create their own Visual Basic code to carry out particular actions in the Application. But why do you need to do this given that each application comes with a host of powerful features? The answer lies in how these features are used. This article summarises three different ways VBA can be used in Office 2010. These points all apply to Word 2010, Excel 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Outlook 2010, Project 2010 and Publisher 2010. How To Make Sure Your Website Is Accessible To All

Your business's website needs to have a wide appeal, so as not to limit your customer base. But it shouldn't be sufficient merely to find what appeals to people, what can persuade them to favour your company. There are also more practical issues that you must always keep in mind when designing and maintaining a website for your business. Visitors to your site may have visual, auditory, motor and other disabilities; it's essential to ensure that your site is available to everyone, whatever their requirements. What's more, this isn't just a question of ensuring your company can reach every client and customer: in some countries, including the UK, US, Ireland and Australia, there exist legal obligations to requiring these provisions to be made.

Combining Dreamweaver With Other Adobe Software For The Perfect Website

Adobe Dreamweaver's raison d'être is the creation of websites. That's what it's there for, that's what it's good at, and it leads the market. However, it doesn't need to work alone. Because Dreamweaver comes from Adobe, users have the advantage of being able to run the program and build websites in tandem with a host of other applications from the same stable - a wide range of content goes into making a modern commercial website, and Dreamweaver can work directly with software such as Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, Catalyst and Device Central to ensure that content is of the very highest quality.

The Most Efficient And Successful Projects Thanks To Microsoft Project

Brunton General Hospital is starting to look a little the worse for wear. It's as clean as can be; its staff are friendly and take pride in their workplace. But since the hospital was built in the 1980s, very little has been done to keep the facilities up-to-date, and a thorough modernisation and refurbishment is long overdue. However, the hospital managers need to be sure that they can carry through the work with as little disruption to patients and the general public as possible - after all, commencing the work won't stop local residents falling ill and having accidents.

Perfect Publishing Across All Platforms, With Adobe InDesign

Major changes are afoot in the county of Wessex. The long-established system of local government in the county, with the majority of responsibilities being dealt with by six district councils, is to be consigned to history; in future, the Wessex unitary authority will have all local issues within its remit. This switch hasn't been universally welcomed, and there's quite a lot of confusion about what the process entails.

Learn The Secrets Of Customising An Autonumber Primary Key In Access

Have you ever wanted to customise an autonumber primary key in an Access table? For example if you delete some records from a table, the auto numbers originally used by the deleted records are not used again, so there are gaps in the primary key numbers. You might then want to reorganise the primary key with successive numbers. Or suppose you want to have a primary starting at a different number, for example 100, you might wonder how to do this. This articles shows you how to restore an autonumber list so there are no missing numbers, and also shows you how to make a custom autonumber list.

How To Sort A List Of Vehicle Number Plates In Year Order In Excel 2010

You may think this is a peculiar topic, but it's an interesting one if you're a license plate dealer, or you keep lists of vehicles and you want to list the vehicles by licence plate date. As the UK license system changed in Sept 2001 we'll only look at sorting license plates lists issued after this date. License numbers since then take the form AB53 CRD or LN04 ABC where the first two letters indicate registration location and the following two numbers are the year identifiers. The final part consists of three random letters. We'll exclude personalised number plates which do not conform to these rules. So for these two examples the year identifiers are 53 and 04.

How To Create A Real Line Graph In Excel 2010 Rather Than A Line Chart

Once you've got the hang of using Excel charts and explored the main types of column, bar, pie and line you might just be wondering how to create a real line graph - like the kinds you drew at school or college, with an X axis and Y axis and a plot line sloping one way or another. You may have created a line chart in Excel, but you'll find that the line just joins vertical or horizontal values. A line graph on the other hand will show the values of X change as you vary the values of Y.

A Potted History Of Photoshop

As I write articles on many aspects of modern working life, I have made observations as to how certain technological advancements have caused decline, even extinction, to existing products as the great technological evolutionary process continues and the weakest go to the wall. Among these have been the demise of the typewriter, which was all but wiped out by the more user-friendly word processor, and the vast thinning down of the telephone directory caused by the rise of the mobile phone.

How To Use Rewards As An Efficient Motivational Tactic

It is very tempting to use rewards as a way to motivate staff to complete a job well or go beyond their call of duty and this is not unreasonable. An additional reward can be anything from a "well done2 box of donuts to an extra monetary bonus and is designed to generate good will amongst hard working staff since it is a practical demonstration of gratitude. It is important to look at rewards for motivational purposes to see that they are appropriate and effective.
