The Spell Checker - My American Ally
Oh, the irony of it. Last month I wrote an article called Spell Checker - Friend or Foe? in which I highlighted some of the ways in which the spell check function can actually work to your disadvantage, such as when typos that are made still form existing words and so mistakes slip through the net. Soon after this article was posted, however, it was pointed out to me that I had misspelled the word 'pencilled' by using only a single 'l'. I found this odd because I always spell that word with the double 'l' and besides I had spell checked it before I submitted it, and no squiggly line appeared underneath the word. I did a check by typing 'pencilled' in Word, and the answer became apparent immediately, and it is yet another cautionary tale from the rather complex world of the spell check function
